Eight Ferraris wrecked in million-dollar pileup

Authorities in Japan were still reconstructing Monday how eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and a few Mercedes-Benzes wrecked on an expressway Sunday morning, coating the road in an Italian red metal sauce worth more than $1 million. It’s not a sight for those squeamish about totaled supercars.

Some 14 cars in all were involved in the chain-reaction crash on an expressway named China Road in Yamaguchi prefecture, leaving 10 people with minor injuries. While the injuries were light, several of the vehicles appear totaled.

How did so many Ferraris end up on the road together? The group — which Japanese police officials called “a gathering of narcissists” — were driving to a supercar meet-up in Hiroshima, where about 100 vehicles were expected to show. As one driver who was invited along but passed noted, it was unusual for such a drive to take the expressway — where speeds are closely monitored and traffic can be thicker due to lower tolls on Sundays. Even so, the Ferraris were estimated to have been running between 80 mph and 100 mph when the crash happened.

Police and video reports say the wreck began when a 60-year-old businessman from Fukushima driving a Ferrari F430 attempted to pass a Toyota Prius, but instead hit the guardrail. That set off a chain reaction among the cars driving in a tight formation behind the lead Ferrari, eventually wrapping up seven other Ferraris — namely a 360 Modena, F355 and a white Testarossa — along with a Lamborghini Diablo and a couple of high-end Mercedes.

The Prius sustained some rear bumper damage, but escaped relatively unharmed.

Even though auto manufacturers have greatly boosted quality and reliability, buying a used car can still be a process fraught with anxiety. In addition to worrying about the honesty of the seller, you also want to be sure to avoid vehicles with poor reliability records.

 To help with that, MoneyWatch looked at owner surveys to see which cars look like trouble, focusing on five separate categories. We focused on 2008 models — the year ranked in the latest dependability study from J.D. Power and Associates. Buying a 3-year-old used car also lets you shop after the biggest new-car depreciation already has taken place: Because used car prices have risen so sharply this year, 1- and 2-year-old used models can make worse financial sense than buying new.

To make our list of used-car rejects, a model had to get the minimum two out of five in the J.D. Power “circle ratings” for dependability. It also had to be ranked below average as a used car by Consumer Reports in its annual April car issue and online car rankings.

Here are our recommendations for used cars to avoid — plus some better ideas in the same categories. Volkswagen and Chrysler Group, which also makes Dodge and Jeep, both have two entries on our avoidance list.


Small Car: Volkswagen Beetle

The Beetle’s cute looks and all-around appeal don’t save it from being on the least reliable list. Owners of the 2008 model told Consumer Reports that they had trouble with the climate control system and power equipment, both of which can lead to expensive repairs. The convertible model is selling for $19,350 on dealer’s lots according to the Kelley Blue Book web site.

• Alternative: Hyundai Elantra. Hyundai has had a remarkably strong sales year for new cars this year. But even in 2008, the company was making quality cars backed by its 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. The Elantra got the maximum five circles in the J.D. Power reliability ratings and is ranked an above-average used car by Consumer Reports, where survey respondents reported no major problems. This model Elantra is selling for $12,435.

Midsize Car: Volkswagen Passat

Volkswagen strikes out again. Despite being praised by reviewers when new, the Passat gets the minimum J.D. Power two circles and a below-average rating from Consumer Reports. Readers there report problems with the fuel, electrical and climate systems and the power equipment.

The 2008 Passat is selling at dealers for $18,515, according to kbb.com.

• Alternative: Ford Fusion. Ford’s first real contender in years against mid-size leaders Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Fusion won the reliability award in this year’s J.D. Power survey. Consumer Reports gives it a top Much Above Average used car rating. Readers there reported no major problems with their 2008 Fusions. Dealers are offering the Fusion for $17,365, according to kbb.com.

Midsize SUV: GMC Acadia

Though its quality has improved in recent models, the 2008 Acadia is a repeat loser in this category. With the minimum two circles in the J.D. Power survey, it gets a worse than average used car ranking from Consumer Reports. Readers there reported problems with the suspension and audio system. The Acadia SLE model is selling for about $25,000 at dealerships, according to kbb.com.

• Alternative: Toyota 4 Runner. This 2008 Toyota stalwart won the J.D. Power reliability award and is rated much better than average as a used car in the Consumer Reports ratings, where readers reported no serious problems. Reviewers praise its capability both on the highway and off-road. The 2008 4Runner SR5 version is selling at about $27,730.

Large SUV: Ford Expedition

Even if you need large-capacity hauling and can ignore the lame mileage numbers (the Expedition is rated at 12 mpg in city driving, 18 highway), look elsewhere. The big boy of the Ford SUV line (whose model names all start with the letter ‘E’) gets the minimum two circles from J.D. Power and a worse-than-average Consumer Reports rating, where readers report problems with the transmission and the audio system.

The used 2008 Expedition sells for $23,530 in the XLT version, according to kbb.com.

• Alternative: Toyota Sequoia. In a category with no clear winner, the Toyota entry again looks like the best bet. It gets four out of five circles in the J.D. Power rating and an above-average rating from Consumer Reports. Reviewers praise its roomy seating and comfortable ride for long highway trips. The 2008 Sequoia SR5 version is selling at $31,265 at dealerships.

Minivan: Chrysler Town & Country

Chrysler originated the minivan and in most years has sold more than other companies. But sometime around 2008, manufacturing quality began to lag.

This Chrysler van got the minimum two circles from J.D. Power and a much-worse-than-average used-car rating from Consumer Reports. Readers there reported problems with the suspension, brakes, climate system and power equipment. The 2008 Town & Country LX version is selling at about $16,000 from dealerships.

• Alternative: Toyota Sienna. As it did last year, the Sienna wins the reliability award for minivans from J.D. Power, and it gets a better-than-average rating from Consumer Reports. Reviewers praise its comfort and seating; it holds up to eight people. The Sienna CE version is selling for an average $20,130, according to kbb.com.
  
  Despite Toyota’s recent recall problems and lagging sales this year, its dominance of numerous categories in three-year-old used cars is a reminder of what a strong record of reliability it has achieved. Domestic companies certainly should not count out Toyota as a strong competitor.

Porsche stolen in 1986 found on container ship headed to the Netherlands

After a man's red Porsche was stolen in Las Vegas in 1986, he had given up on finding the sports car, claimed the insurance money, and moved on with his life.

The man, Peter O'Toole, received quite the blast from the past when he found out that the car was found on a container ship in California bound for the Netherlands.

Now living in Oregon where he owns a construction company, Mr O'Toole hadn't thought much about his red sports car of yesteryear since he claimed the insurance money for the used car he bought from a German man for $17,000.

Quite the ride: This 1976 Porsche was stolen in Las Vegas in 1986 and found in October aboard a container ship leaving Los Angeles headed for the Netherlands

'I wasn't even a sports car guy, but I loved that car,' he told AOL Autos. 'I was a cool dad in that car.'

When he bought the car, Mr O'Toole was living in Las Vegas, working as a pit boss at the Barbary Coast casino. The car was stolen the evening of November 24, 1986 as Mr O'Toole went in for a workout at his local gym.

Fast forward a quarter of a century, and shipyard officials realized the car was one of 24 stolen cars on the same ship.

Given inflation and the increased value that comes with the age of the car, Mr O'Toole's former ride is now worth $27,000.

Raking up the miles: Since it was stolen in Las Vegas, the car has covered much of the United States in the past 25 years

The container held a total of 100 cars with varying issues: 24 were stolen like Mr O'Toole's, 63 were undeclared, seven had lower valuations than necessary and six had false documentation.

The total value of the questionable cars on board rings in at roughly $1.8million.

While it may look the same on the outside, the Porsche that Mr O'Toole used to call his own has changed over the years.

Since it was stolen, it has been registered in  Florida, Washington, and New Jersey.

(Also, when found on the boat, it was missing it's engine. If found with the engine, the collector's car would have been worth over $80,000, but it is thought that a new engine could be installed in Europe to allow for higher driving speeds.)

Though the car was found in the Los Angeles Long Beach ship yard on October 25, Mr O'Toole had not been notified of it's discovery until a reporter from AOL Autos rang him for the story.

'Really?' Mr O'Toole said when hearing of the find.

'I'm going to go look this up,' he said

The high-performance Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will carry a base sticker price of $54,995 including shipping charges when it goes on sale next spring as a 2012 model.
That's more than double the sticker price of a base 2012 Camaro coupe, which starts at $24,100 including shipping charges, and more than a base 2012 Chevrolet Corvette coupe, which starts at $50,500.
The 2012 Camaro ZL1 packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 rated at 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet says the car has a top speed of 184 mph and makes the run from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The Camaro ZL1 is set up for track use and includes coolers for the engine, transmission and differential fluids and cooling ducts for the brakes. Also standard is a suspension that uses electrically charged fluid to rapidly change damper stiffness.
Chevrolet said pricing for the Camaro ZL1 convertible will be released later.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ford said the 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 will get 650 hp from its supercharged 5.8-liter V8--another salvo in the muscle-car wars.

  With a range-topping 650 hp, an alternative rock band and Carroll Shelby, the updated lineup of the 2013 Ford Mustang officially debuted on Tuesday night in Los Angeles at a glitzy event the night before the West Coast's spotlight auto show.
The Shelby GT500 was the star attraction, even with the blindingly yellow Boss 302 and convertible variants alongside. With an increase of 100 hp, the latest edition of the GT500 won praise even from its legendary namesake.
"I think it's the greatest Mustang that's ever been built," the 88-year-old legend told the crowd at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, after being introduced by Ford sales and marketing chief Jim Farley.
But he didn't stop there, effusing, "I've always been asked, 'What is your favorite car?' and I've always replied, 'The next one.' "
"Well, I'm taking that back tonight. This is my favorite car."
Ford revealed the refreshed version of the Mustang hours before the L.A. auto show kicked off, complete with a performance by alt rockers the Bravery.
Cosmetic upgrades to the Mustang line include a snarkier front end, HID headlights accented with LED strips and sequential taillights that flash in tandem with the turn signals. Additionally, the 5.0-liter GT now makes 420 hp, up from the current 412-hp output.

Tracking device leads to Nigeria car theft ring in Houston

A hit on a LoJack device from a stolen Honda by a state trooper driving over the Ship Channel bridge led to the bust of an international car theft ring at the Port of Houston, KHOU-TV (Channel 11) is reporting.

“We located the signal from a container yard where there were probably 40 to 50 containers being stacked,” said Senior Officer Jim Woods with the Houston Police Department.
With help from the Port of Houston Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, one by one, the containers were taken down. A few hours later the car was found tightly packed and ready to be shipped to Nigeria.
The discovery of the stolen vehicle at the port turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg. … HPD had stumbled on to a sophisticated auto theft ring.

It turned out the cars had been stolen by a man who posed as a car buyer in Dallas. He would take a car for a test drive and never return.
KHOU reported the person connected with the shipment is from Garland, Texas, but is not cooperating with authorities.

Camaro, stolen in New Jersey in 1975, recovered in California

Sometimes things do workout.......

Janice Maffucci had given up on ever seeing her 1969 Chevy Camaro SS again. After all, it was stolen back in 1975.

So when California cops called recently to tell her they'd found the hot rod, she hung up on them a few times, thinking it was a prank.

"I never thought that this would ever happen," Maffucci said.

But it did, and here's how: In February, Keith Williams, a car enthusiast from Santa Maria, Calif., bought the classic muscle car on eBay from a Tennessee seller for $28,000. But he soon noticed some features that he knew were inconsistent with the original model. For instance, the original six-cylinder engine had been replaced with a 427 V-8, and other parts seem to come from different sources.

So Williams contacted the California Highway Patrol (CHP). CHP officers used identifying numbers on the car to find its original VIN number. And when they ran the number, they found that it matched the one for a butternut yellow Camaro stolen in Newark, New Jersey -- on July 8, 1975.

The cops called Maffucci, who was listed as the owner. She told them the car had been stolen from outside the post office where her father worked.


"I still can't believe it, but I think it's just great," Maffucci told KSBY, a local California TV station. She said she plans on selling it, though Williams is no longer interested in buying.

Williams had insured the purchase, so he'll get his money back, though not the $875 he paid to transport the car. Still, he said it's worth it. "I got a great story to tell my grand-kids," he told the TV station.

The CHP is still working to try to find out who might have stolen the car.

The 1969 Chevy holds an almost iconic place in American muscle-car culture. The narrator of "Racing in the Streets," Bruce Springsteen's 1978 ballad about a washed-up New Jersey drag racer, drives a "'69 Chevy with a 396, fuelie heads, and a Hurst on the floor." And a rival is said to drive a Camaro.

Huge 18-mile Crack in Glacier on Pine Island,Global Warming?

A New York-sized glacier is about to break off from Pine Island, a huge 30-mile 'tongue' of ice snaking out from the Hudson Mountains to the Amundsen Sea.

After an eighteen-mile long crack in the ice was photographed by NASA's Operation Ice Bridge last month, the scientists have flown a follow-up mission over the 'calving' iceberg.




'We are actually now witnessing how it happens and it’s very exciting for us,' said Ice Bridge project scientist Michael Studinger, Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. 'To my knowledge, no one has flown a 3D laser imaging instrument over an actively developing rift such as this.'

Pine Island Glacier last calved a significant iceberg in 2001, and some scientists have speculated recently that it was primed to calve again.
 But until an Oct. 14 IceBridge flight of NASA's DC-8, no one had seen any evidence of the ice shelf beginning to break apart. Satellite imagery seems to show the first signs of the crack in early October.
Pine Island has scientists' attention because it is both big and unstable – scientists call it the largest source of uncertainty in global sea level rise projections. But the calving underway is part of a natural process, NASA says.


The team diverted their DC-8 back over the glacier for a return scanning mission.
The IceBridge team observed the rift running across the ice shelf for about 18 miles. The Airborne Topographic Mapper makes its precision topography maps with a laser than scans 360 degrees 20 times per second, while firing 3,000 laser pulses per second.
When flying at an altitude of 3,000 feet, as during this flight, it measures a swath of the surface about 1,500 feet wide. The rift is 250 feet wide along most of its length - so the veteran DC-8 pilot had a tricky job to keep the plane straight along the rift. In places, the rift is already 800 feet wide. When the iceberg breaks free it will cover about 340 square miles (880 square kilometers) of surface area.
Radar measurements suggested the ice shelf in the region of the rift is about 1,640 feet (500 meters) feet thick, with only about 160 feet of that floating above water and the rest submerged. It is likely that once the iceberg floats away, the leading edge of the ice shelf will have receded farther than at any time since its location was first recorded in the 1940s.

'A lot of times when you’re in science, you don’t get a chance to catch the big stories as they happen because you’re not there at the right place at the right time,' said John Sonntag, Instrument Team Lead for Operation IceBridge, based at Goddard Space Flight Center. 'But this time we were.'
